Yiwu is the world’s largest wholesale market of small consumer goods, and has built a modern system of e-commerce, logistics, banking, and tourism to facilitate international commerce. However, the government is straining to provide adequate services and support to a growing migrant population; public schools do not have the capacity to integrate immigrant children into the compulsory education system, while few public service providers are proficient in foreign languages. Yiwu’s continued growth as a center for international commerce depends on its ability to better address the needs and interests of the foreign nationals who make up a majority of the population.

Yiwu is also challenged by rainfall flooding that poses a risk to residents’ property and livelihood. Floods may result in collapsed homes, submerged roads, and the disruption of public services, including power and telecommunication facilities that power the economy. To address this challenge, the city has built a network of organizations to respond quickly in the event of flooding, enabling quicker responses and the evacuation of residents in affected areas.
