The island city-state of Singapore is among the world’s largest financial centers and one of its busiest ports. With a historically diverse population, the city has taken a multipronged approach to encourage integration and strengthen social and civic bonds. Now Singapore looks to improve its resilience in responding to environmental challenges. Poor air quality, caused by fires in neighboring countries, creates health problems for residents.

Singapore also faces the more serious threats of flooding and drought. Using a system-wide source-pathway-receptor approach, officials have managed to develop and implement new drainage standards to decrease risk. Innovative drought management responses, including desalination and high-grade reclamation technologies, also form part of Singapore’s strategy.
