Porto Alegre’s Resilience Journey

The city of Porto Alegre released its Resilience Strategy on January 27, 2016. Explore the strategy here.

Porto Alegre’s Resilience Story

Residents of Porto Alegre enjoy a high quality of life, but unprecedented population growth has led to urban challenges. Large residential buildings now occupy former conservation areas, housing has sprung up in areas where floods and landslides are common, and there has been an explosive growth in the number of cars. The Brazilian city has established a working group made up of universities, government officials, and residents to build an urban resilience plan that diagnoses risk areas and better educates and alerts residents.
