Huangshi is a relatively new city in Hubei Province, in south central China, on the bank of the Yangtze River. It was built to respond to growing demands for natural resources, especially the minerals found in the region. However, intensive mining and smelting have contributed to significant air and water pollution. This has had negative consequences for residents and surrounding agriculture, and led to tension between the government and farmers.

Furthermore, strip mining has resulted in over 100 man-made bluffs, which are susceptible to landslides when the rainy season brings floods. Officials have been working to increase vegetation in abandoned sites to help stabilize the land, and have also invested significant resources toward controlling water pollution through sewage collection, water treatment, and ecological restoration projects.
