A Chief Resilience Officer’s First 100 Days
Last week, Asia Pacific’s newest Chief Resilience Officers convened in Singapore with the 100 Resilient Cities Asia-Pacific team.
The intended outcomes were threefold:
- To define the scope and structure of their roles
- To dive into resilience thinking in depth
- To get to know their peers as they embark on their City Resilience Strategy process
Chief Resilience Officers from Jakarta, Can Tho, Melaka, and Chennai went through an intensive three-day onboarding process to help them prepare for their roles in creating positive change in their cities. The week started with an introduction to urban resilience theory before moving into the tools, methodologies, and adaptive leadership skills that they will apply as they lead their cities through their unique resilience journey.
The CROs also took time to learn from their fellow network city Singapore, who have also recently appointed a CRO, by exploring some of the interventions the city has put in place to secure its future and deliver multiple benefits. They visited Singapore’s Public Utilities Board water management plant to learn more about how Singapore is working to mitigate one of its most existential threats–the supply of drinking water–and headed to Bishan Ang Mo Kio Park to see how the city is shifting away from grey infrastructure and towards green and blue infrastructure.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the CROs formed connections with their new colleagues as they joined a small but growing community of Chief Resilience Officers across Asia and worldwide. The CRO is instrumental to how 100 Resilient Cities is helping cities address the challenges of complexity and scalability, and thus how they will contribute to the evolution of a long-lasting global community of practice around urban resilience.
