100RC Announces Partnership with What3Words In Innovative Global Urban Resilience Initiative
what3words joins 100RC’s global group of Platform Partners to provide technical solutions for urban addressing challenges.
By providing simple, memorable 3 word addresses, what3words can provide critical infrastructure to the 75% of the countries in the world that suffer from inadequate addressing. This can help the 4 billion unaddressed people receive deliveries and aid, vote and exercise their rights as citizens.
100 Resilient Cities - Pioneered by the Rockefeller Foundation (100RC) is today announcing a partnership with what3words, who will make their addressing platform available to 100RC’s network cities.
what3words is a location reference platform based on a global grid of 57 trillion 3mx3m squares, where each square has a unique pre-assigned 3 word address. Quicker to implement than street addressing and easier to communicate that GPS coordinates or alphanumeric systems the solution helps anyone who needs to find or share a precise location. The system will be available to members of 100RC’s network, and will be used to help design and implement the cities’ long term resilience plan.
Every location in the world already has a 3 word address. The Benthemplein Water Square in Rotterdam, which combines water storage with urban public space, is shells.fleet.pancake. Passengers can board the Metrocable in Medellin at announce.public.pickles. The heart of the Gentilly Resilience District in New Orleans will be cheese.sulky.declining.
Providing addresses to locations, particularly homes of the poor and vulnerable, has a huge resilience impact. Addressing helps disasters agencies locate and assist residents after disasters, makes it easier to deliver aid to remote areas, and provides major economic benefits.
what3words joins a prestigious group of other “Platform Partners” that have committed to helping cities around the world become more resilient to the shocks and stresses that are an increasingly large aspect of urban life. Platform partners are dedicated to providing 100RC network cities with solutions that integrate big data, analytics, technology, resilience land use planning, infrastructure design, and new financing and insuring products. 100RC Platform Partners include Microsoft, Swiss Re, Palantir, the World Bank, MWH Global, Veolia, Ushahidi, and Sandia National Laboratories.
“We are on a mission to change the way people communicate location; to make the world a more efficient, less frustrating and a safer place,” said Chris Sheldrick, CEO and co-founder of what3words. “100RC is recognized as the leader in driving urban innovation and through our partnership we can impact the lives of millions.”
100RC is dedicated to helping cities, in which an ever-growing percentage of people live, become more resilient to the shocks (i.e. hurricanes, fires, floods, etc.) and stresses (chronic water shortages, homelessness, unemployment, etc.) they are increasingly facing in the 21st century. Currently 50% of urban dwellers don’t have a street address and the problem will increase. By 2050, the world’s cities will absorb 3 billion people, at which point 70% of the planet will live in urban areas. Without an address people struggle to stake a property claim, received aid, take out low-interest credit, or run a business. More broadly the ability to simply communicate location is fundamental for logistics, emergency response, ecommerce growth and the overall smooth running of a city.
“Cities can’t just build resilience out of thin air – they need the right tools to do it,” said Michael Berkowitz, President of 100 Resilient Cities. “what3words provides an immediate and cost effective addressing infrastructure to build other services on.”
what3words is already being used around the world by many organisations to better co-ordinate their projects and services and increase efficiency. Notable integrations include Mongolia’s national postal system, navigation software platform Navmii, UK address database Aligned Assets, transit app TripGo, Norway’s National Mapping agency, The United Nations Development Programme and favela delivery company; Carteiro Amigo.
